Groundhogs and Groundhog Dogs

Ever since I was a kid, I've liked hounds, and I'm especially fond of miniature dachshunds—groundhog dogs. I was born on that celebrated Pennsylvania holiday called Groundhog Day. That may explain why I have an affinity for groundhogs, but it doesn't explain how that happened.

I find marmota monax (the scientific name), groundhogs, woodchucks, whistlepigs—whatever you want to call them—fascinating. They sleep all winter, climb trees, and lead my groundhog dog astray. This week, I hope you'll find them fascinating, too. (By the way, the photo with this column comes from my niece, another groundhog dog lover.)
